Cities are growing steadily. Until 2050 two out of three people will live in urban spaces. Since already now three quarter of energy are consumed in cities. This development demands new solutions to cope with the increasing use of natural and social resources. In order to ensure that cities become inclusive and affordable drivers of economic growth and social development.
METACITIES is acting as an international network of urban innovators by bringing together all relevant stakeholders working on smart city solutions and urban challenges. In this sense, METACITIES will serve as a matchmaker, by bringing industry, research and decision-makers together in order to enable optimal cooperation between those domains from a Meta level.
A main aim of METACITIES is to bring its members on board of related research and innovation projects funded by leading research programmes as Horizon 2020, Active Assisted Living, Interreg, etc. Therefore, the team of METACITIES is providing its members and partners continuous updates on upcoming call for proposals and is forming full or parts of consortia to tackle future research and innovation challenges in a collaborative manner.
The network positions itself in the context of social science as well as in the IT sector. In doing so, METACITIES is trend-oriented and focused on innovation and future prospects. It will provide a wide range of opportunities and channels, to holistically approach smart cities and the deliverance of next-generation citizen services.
The term metacity serves as a conceptual framework helping people comprehend the socio-ecological relationships in areas all over a city, it is about understanding any city as a system of systems. Metacities are patch dynamic systems with neighborhoods, districts and boundaries changing over time. There are no clear boundaries between traditional cities anymore.
The network will face current challenges in transport, energy supply, waste management as well as infrastructure and aims to bridge the gap between unmet needs and potential solutions by forcing development and implementation of social and technical innovations. METACITIES operates in the interests of Horizon 2020, the EU program for research and innovation.
